Skratch SEO Vol. 10

Cilla really looked me dead in the eyes and said “when we finish hole 18, we can just go back to hole 1 since we skipped it”. Unfortunately, the golf course does not care that we could not get our swing together on hole 1 that day…Oh, and did you see that Google just gave us a new way to see how your social content performs in Search?

Now, I grew up in the original Facebook and Instagram wave…Then Tumblr, VSCO, curated Instagram grids, the hype of Snapchat, and finally the rave of TikTok.And I know you’re probably saying at least three eras I missed out loud right now. The list could seriously go on. (Kinda rude of me to not mention ones like Vine, iFunny, etc)But the latest wave is here, and this one is BIG, because Google Search Console can now start telling you how some of your social media content is performing in Google Searches.Andddd because you’re my lovely Skratch club members you get first access to the instagram post/knowledge drop!

HERE’S THE THING

Google recently added something called Platform Properties to Search Console.

Right now, that includes Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube. I have no idea if they plan to add Facebook, or anything else in the future.

But once connected, you can see things like clicks, impressions, search terms, and which posts people are finding through Google.

Which is pretty freaking cool.

Connecting your social platform simply gives you data like:

🏌🏼‍♂️ What social posts are actually showing up in Search?

🏌🏼‍♂️ What are people searching before they find them?

🏌🏼‍♂️ And is something you posted months ago quietlypulling its weight all of a sudden?!

HERE’S WHAT TO DO

Open Google Search Console and click the property dropdown where you normally switch between websites.

Choose Add Property, then look for the option to add a platform like Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube.

Choose the account you want to track and follow Google’s verification steps. From there watch the data roll in! 🤑

Social Media and Search Are Getting Weirdly Close

For years we’ve treated social media and SEO like two completely separate worlds and I’m sure you’ve already been lectured about SEO from the angle of “your IG post only last 48-72 hours, but not SEO!”

Someone might discover you through Instagram, someone else might ask Google a question and find one of your Instagram posts. Someone might see your Reel, Google your business name, read three blogs, disappear for four months, then randomly inquire on a Tuesday.

People are weird and that means the path is weird—but not weird where you can just skip a hole on the course and return back to it whenever you want (I’m looking at you, Cilla). ⛳️

Please don’t take this as me saying Instagram is just as important as SEO, or spend hours making content because of this update.

But what I am saying is that if you are already creating social content: Connect it. Let that information help you decide what is worth creating more of.
