You’ve heard all the noise about blogging being the ‘it girl’ turned ‘blogging is dead’, and back to being the ‘it girl’. If that trend shares anything with you, it’s that blogging is indeed still one of the most efficient ways to strengthen your website’s SEO. One of the biggest objections we hear when it comes to blogging is: “is it actually worth my time?”. Here are 3 checkpoints I am asking when curious about if blogging is actually working for my business and marketing goals.

3 Checkpoints to Help You Figure Out If Blogging is Actually Working

These checkpoints are going to differ from person to person, but the overall themes are going to be applicable to anyone with a goal of leveraging the power of blogging to strengthen their SEO results.

  1. Am I helping my leads make decisions on their own?
  2. Is writing this blog going to make running my business easier?
  3. Have I noticed my website data improving?

Let’s dig in deeper…

1. Am I Helping my Leads Make Decisions on Their Own?

This is one of my favorite types of blogs to write because in a way it’s ‘killing two birds with one stone’. Blogs in this checkpoint often represent awareness and conversion blog content (4 Types of Blogging Content). This type of content is incredibly helpful because it leads to answering less questions during the inquiry and onboarding process, helps weed out potential yellow/red flag clients, and build trust by showing your expertise before a potential lead ever inquires.

2. Is Writing this Blog Going to Make Running my Business Easier?

It should. 👀 I will die on the hill that all blogs can be beneficial for your business in some capacity. Whether it’s a blog aimed at targeting a specific keyword or a blog sharing your personality, both have a time and place to help convert your potential leads. I also believe this is one of the biggest hang ups to starting blogs because writing blogs that focus on keywords is not as exciting as making a pretty IG carousel around a similar topic. At the end of the day, I recommend to all of our members inside our Blogging Membership, The Publishing House to come back to this exact question: how is this blog going to make running your business easier?

3. Have I Noticed my Website Data Improving?

Last but not least, the data. If your website is connected to Google Search Console and Google Analytics, you’re likely receiving a cute monthly email from Google sharing what pages are trending up, keywords to pay attention to, and SEO updates to be made. A few data points that I’m looking at for our Long-Game Blogging and SEO Clients is:

  • Is traffic increasing?
  • Is the average session duration getting longer?
  • Is my bounce rate decreasing?
  • Am I getting new email subscribers? (I like to personally create a separate inline opt-in form to help track this!)
  • Am I getting any new leads from blogs? You can track this by embedding a contact form in your blog posts or by using a UTM (Urchin Tracking Model) to help track the user behavior.

If you are unsure what to do with all of this data, I recommend checking out one of our pals, Three Groves Marketing in the industry to help you make sense of it all! We have learned so much from her freebies, guest workshops, and content.
